Art of the Possible: An Exhibition Celebrating 50 Years of Gateway Arts

September 5 – November 17, 2023
Gateway Arts Gallery

Gateway Arts has turned 50. Our visionary founders sought to aid recently deinstitutionalized individuals with opportunities for artistic expression. They created a community of care, where art and craft opened doors to flourishing lives and livelihoods.

There were many programs created in this era, but Gateway Arts was the first to have the arts at the center of its mission. Painting and drawing were primary creative outlets for our artists, but traditional crafts such as weaving and candle-making were also popular. Ceramics were introduced in the early 1980’s. Today artists work in seven dynamic studios in a wide range of visual media.

Art of the Possible is the first in a year-long celebration to honor the artists of Gateway Arts and the community that supports it. The artwork in this exhibition represents a few of the exceptional works of art in our new publication of the same name.

Gateway arts staff do amazing things to help our artists thrive. Yet we are the fortunate ones who are given the chance to work alongside incredible people in their endeavor to explore, create, and celebrate themselves.
