Ona Stewart in the Weaving studio

Ona Stewart

Ona Stewart was born in 1958. She attended Gateway Arts from 1995-2021.

Stewart is Deaf-Blind, and uses her hands to see and hear by communicating in ASL. Stewart enjoys tactile processes which lead to her throwing on the potter’s wheel, weaving on a production loom, and creating jewelry during her time at Gateway. Additionally, Stewart would sew striking designs on fabric creating compelling graphics which were then presented as wall hangings or appliqued to pillows and bags. Stewart is a strong advocate for the Deaf-Blind community, often making speeches at the state house, giving lectures to Harvard Medical School students, or helping to train interns from local colleges on the intricacies of working with the Deaf-Blind.

Stewart has exhibited her artwork throughout Massachusetts at the Berenberg Gallery and The Gateway Gallery. Read a wonderful work of descriptive prose about Ona by Paul Hostovsky, “There’s Only One Ona,” in The Writer’s Worshop Review Vol. 14.
