"The range and depth of the art and fine handcrafts here is incredible. Be warned: regardless of your level of interest in art, you'll find it difficult, if not impossible, to leave here without becoming a fan...and maybe a long-time collector as well. It happened to me!" ~testimonial at WBZTV A-LIST AWARD site

Severe Budget Cuts

On Oct. 15, 2008, Governor Patrick announced $1 billion in state budget cuts. Gateway Arts, which had been providing psychiatric day rehabilitation services for 19 clients funded by the Department of Mental Health that withdrew $145,000 which resulted in a loss of services for almost all of these artists, the elimination of four jobs, and negatively impacted the entire Program due, in part, to staff reduction.

The cuts were implemented on December 31.

Although we can’t predict with absolute certainty what the future will bring, be assured that we will continue to work hard to help the Gateway artists and the staff who serve them in making any needed transitions.

We most especially welcome your donations at this time to help us formulate a pilot plan to continue to provide services to some of these most talented artists. To make tax-deductible donations or with any fundraising ideas or opportunities, please call Mona at 617-734-1577, x21.

Thank you for your continued support during these troubling financial times!

GATEWAY DIRECTOR WAS ON PANEL AT MFA FILM EVENT

Art on Film

Lorri Berenberg, Director of the Berenberg Gallery and Rae Edelson, Director of Gateway Arts, a Vinfen Service, were present for the discussion that followed the screening at the MFA of the film, Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott by Betsy Bayha (
US, 2006, 26 min.).

For Judith Scott, a woman with Down syndrome, who is deaf and does not speak, colorful fiber sculptures made out of found objects and yarn are her complex means of communication. Judith is a self-taught artist. After thirty-five years of institutional life in her home state of Ohio, with little or no creative outlet, she began to experiment with art when her twin sister Joyce regained custody of Judith and moved her to the San Francisco Bay Area. This film transports viewers into the mysterious realm of the Outsider artist. We see the studio where Judith creates every day, the group home where she lives in Berkeley as well as the museums and art galleries around the world where Judith's sculptures are exhibited. Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott delves into the life of a compelling, creative and talented individual who has survived in the face of daunting odds to create rich and intriguing works of art.
